As a fan of your writing, I was THRILLED to read this (and see the nicest shout out from you). I constantly feel like once I just acquire *insert thing here* then I will finally arrive into my personal style, so glad to read I’m not alone. I felt like your advice RE accessories is so valuable because accessories elevate outfits! I was just talking with friends about how accessories are also the most helpful thing to invest in when you are having kids because your body changes so much but a great bracelet always fits.
Loved reading this! After I did a no buy January I noticed that I’m lacking in accessories - and I started to feel it when I got dressed - wishing for just a little something to make my uniforms feel fresh. Wearing the things I love and feel great in on repeat works, but it’s really nice to ave little ways to change things up and feel creative! Also - I read a great substack awhile back from Liza Belmonte where she talks about thinking about improving your wardrobe by 10% (or any percent) every season. You can’t buy everything all at once, you add things piece by piece and it gets an incrementally better and better over time!! I loved that, it’s really stuck with me! Xx
I love this comment! The idea of making your closet 10% better each season lifts a lot of the pressure and helps you just enjoy the artful (& long) process of wardrobe curation.
I love reading you explore these ideas. The images are great too. Another idea I picked up on through these images is all the clothes look one size “too big” vs fitted. Sometimes clothing with some room makes it look a little more luxe. PS thanks for the shout out. I love exploring the data around the trends even if I don’t wear myself.
Elle, you know I’m team accessories all day - not only do they increase the versatility of basics - they tend to travel easier, can add subtle or bold interest depending on how you build onto your base outfit (like spices in cooking), usually can be worn now how our bodies might change overtime. And on and on. As someone who’s been living out of a suitcase for the last year, I’ve found I travel with 3+ accessories for every 1 piece of clothing. Excited to see you explore more with accessories!
I love the analogy of accessories in the wardrobe = spices in the kitchen. Like in cooking, they can take a base outfit in so many different directions- perfect when traveling! You do this so well with your outfits, I've for sure taken notes!
Yes!! I've recently come to this same realization and have been trying to focus on my accessory game (of which I have none) instead of continuing to add more neutral staples onto my collection of neutral staples, hahah. I bought a sparkly Mondo Mondo crystal bracelet and a pair of Eliou silver earrings to start. Also recently discovered Completed Works and love everything they make! And obsessed with the idea of a Toteme-esque silk scarf!
I feel like we're having the same thoughts lately!! By repeating the same type of outfits, it gave me a lot of perspective on what my closet would benefit the most from and how I wanted to evolve in my style. I agree that being in that position has had its pros. For me, it allowed me to see more clearly what I needed to prioritize to get more versatility in my closet.
Also, major +1 to accessories. Last year I saw a tiktok of someone wearing the same base and just changed out their jackets/coats and accessories. It's was something (along with hairstyles!) I noticed that can make a big difference.
Yesss, it’s not the most *fun* phase but it’s so valuable for learning. I’ve been surprised by the pieces I realized would increase the versatility of my closet the most- like accessories!
Love your writing, so I’m VERY flattered we think alike. Thank you for reading!! Xx
Ugh, this was such a good read. I’ve been thinking about this topic for the past couple months as I’m trying to spend less & be more innovative with what I already have in my closet. Im big on accessories but trying to explore different types besides jewelry.
Anyway, thanks for this reminder. Recently stumbled across your publication & loveee it <3
