Consumption has been weighing heavily on my mind. I feel like I was in the dark on this topic for so long, but now the light has been turned on and I can’t help but notice the wastefulness everywhere I look. I am so exhausted from being influenced and uninfluenced. From empty promises that a product can change my life. From ‘dupes’ that I had to try 10 of before I caved and got the real thing. From pressure to keep up with trends that move along faster than express shipping can arrive.
What I long for is a shift from greed to gratitude. From frivolousity to intention. From consumption to creation.

My personal action steps…
Purchase quality items that you love and are made from natural materials. Own fewer but better. Be thoughtful rather than impulsive.
Resist buying something new for every special occasion, rather curate a wardrobe that accommodates different events.
You do not need special plastic organizers for everything, you simply need fewer things.
Avoid single-use items such as wrapping paper, plastic bags, paper cups, etc. Reusable items look beautiful, save money, and function better in the long run.
Support a small business over a big box store whenever possible.
Consuming less applies to media too. Hop off the hampster wheel of being influenced. Pick up a book, pursue a hobby, or go on a walk.
Create joy with what you have. Light and cherish your candles instead of buying a new one. Savor your skincare routine instead of comparing it to someone else’s. Relish in how beautiful you can make things without having to spend a penny.
Fresh air is a great cure for an ungrateful heart.
Reducing waste and saving money is far more gratifying than filling my life with stuff. My actions have altered the posture of my heart to less materialism, more gratitude, and more awe at the nature God created for us to enjoy. I do not claim perfection, but I am striving for progress.
yes x a million. soooo well said! you nailed this.
yes legit 100% agree with this. i'm making a more conscious effort this year to be very very intentional with my shopping and not purchase anything unless I truly truly love or need it. Made a blip recently and impluse shopped and ended up returning haha
side note, happy to see inclusion of faith and gratitude in your writing!
